Traditional cars slow down mainly by squeezing brake pads against rotors and converting the vehicle’s motion into heat. Hybrids can recover some of that energy instead. When you slow down, the electric motor can work in reverse as a generator, helping decelerate the car while sending energy back to the hybrid battery.
