The Terminator's Sweet Rides

Arnold Schwarzenegger may be one of America's greatest action-movie heroes, starring in classics like The Terminator (1984) franchise, Total Recall (1990), and Commando (1985). But he doesn't only drive huge tanks and fast cars in the movies. Let's take a look inside the Governator's awesome car collection.

Rss Thumb - Arnie's Cars

1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz

When Arnie first made it big in Hollywood, he did what most people do when they get their first massive paycheck: He bought a car. But not just any car. He bought a beautiful, all-white Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, a convertible beast with a V8 engine that produced 325 hp and a top speed of 122 mph. He paid just $7,286 for the car in the early 1980s and sold it at auction in 2013 for $649,000.

Hummer H1 Slant Back

Schwarzenegger is famous for his love of all things military and deeply respects the Armed Forces. While he's had a couple of Hummers in his time, the H1 Slant Back is his baby. It was Arnie who pestered AM General (the company that produced the military version of the Hummer, the Humvee) to make a civilian version after he saw a US Army convoy of Humvees roll by while filming Kindergarten Cop (1990). His is a dark green color and doesn't have all of the accoutrements of a military Humvee, despite Schwarzenegger's proficiency with the armaments.

Dodge Challenger SRT8

Of course, some upgraded American muscle must appear in the garage of America's muscle-man of the 1980s. That is the Dodge Challenger SRT8. Fitted with a 6.1L Hemi V8 engine, 425 hp, and a top speed of 173 mph, the Challenger is Schwarzenegger's memory of when Dodge was producing amazing American ICE muscle cars.

Custom-Made Kreisel Electric G500

After spending many years as the poster boy for Hummers and other single-digit-per-gallon vehicles, Arnie is acquiring electric cars, including this custom-made Kreisel Electric G500. Built on a Mercedes G-Wagon platform, the Kreisel G500 conversion cost $1 million. Although Schwarzenegger's efforts are laudable, it will take 50 years to break even on the amount of fossil fuels required to perform such a conversion.

Bentley Continental GT Supersport Convertible

Joining Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, David Beckham, and many others of substantial wealth, Arnold Schwarzenegger drives a Bentley Continental GT Supersport in all-white. This convertible version is designed to fit Schwarzenegger's significant stature but is packed with power. Under the hood, a 6L W12 engine produces a stunning 700 hp and a top speed of 205 mph; it's one of his quickest rides.

Bugatti Veyron

If you were wondering about the quickestthat title goes to the Bugatti Veyron in his garage. It can reach an astonishing top speed of 252 mph and travel from standing to sixty in 2.5 seconds. Powered by an 8L W16 engine producing an incredible 987 hp, the Veyron is what Arnie is driving when he says he'll "be back," only to drive off at seemingly warp speed.

1st Generation Tesla Roadster

Schwarzenegger bought Teslas before they were cool and well before they became decidedly uncool. His first-generation Tesla Roadster was purchased in 2008, when he was still Governor of California. Unfortunately, the governor struggled to fit into his new electric whip and couldn't easily return the car to Tesla, so there's every indication that he begrudgingly hung onto the car.

Porsche 997 Turbo Cabriolet

Of course, the world's favorite Austrian was going to have a German-made car in his garage. The Porsche 997 Turbo Cabriolet is doubtlessly one of Schwarzenegger's favorite cars because despite not being the fastest in his fleet, he'd have won a race between it and the Harrier jet from True Lies (1994). The small 3.8L engine produces a stunning 572 hp and can reach a top speed of 199 mph

Audi R8 E-Tron Concept

Another impulsive electrical purchase from the Governator was the Audi R8 E-Tron. Designed by Audi as an all-electric version of their R8 sports car, the E-Tron was just a concept when Arnie stopped by the Audi booth at the LA  Auto Show and got a tour of the E-Tron concept. He ordered one on the spot for $200,000.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

Big men like Arnold Schwarzenegger need big cars. And while his Hummer may satisfy his off-road cravings and his Porsche or Bugatti get him places quickly, his Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is a much more refined purchase. At $199,999, Schwarzenegger certainly shelled out for this excellent piece of German engineering. Sleek looking and high-performing, the 6.2L V8 produces an astonishing 563 hp and can take the Merc from 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 196 mph

Mercedes-Benz Unimog

Another Mercedes in his garage (a very high garage, at that) is the huge Mercedes-Benz Unimog. It's an off-roading beast with a 218-hp engine and enormous 22-inch wheels. Originally built in 1977, Arnie paid $350,000 for this behemoth. It was put up for auction at the end of 2023 and sold for an undisclosed sum in early 2024 as part of a push for all-electric cars and a shift away from ICE cars.

A Literal Tank

That's right: Arnold Schwarzenegger literally owns a tank. Specifically, the M47 Patton tank used during the Cold War. Equipped with armaments (that don't work), the beast, designed to run over things in its path, travels at a maximum speed of 30 mph and has a 600kW engine that produces 810 hp. He's taken multiple opportunities over the years to run over lined-up cars with his tank. I mean, what else are you supposed to do? Just look at the thing.

My mechanic says manufacturers intentionally make simple repairs harder every year. Is that actually happening?

If your mechanic says simple repairs seem harder than they used to, there is real evidence behind the complaint. Modern vehicles pack in more electronics, tighter packaging, and more software controls than cars from even 10 or 15 years ago. That does not mean every automaker is deliberately trying to punish owners, but it does mean many routine jobs now take more time, more tools, and more training.

My wife insists every family needs a brand-new vehicle for safety. It's so expensive—is the safety gap between new and old cars really that big?

Few garage arguments get heated faster than this one. One spouse says only a brand-new vehicle is safe enough for the family, while the other looks at the monthly payment and winces. The good news is that the truth is more nuanced than either extreme, and the data gives us a much clearer answer.
