Mazda 626 Turbo

The turbocharged version of the Mazda 626 proved that a practical family sedan could also be genuinely fun to drive. With lively performance, excellent reliability, and understated styling, it earned praise from enthusiasts. Yet relatively few survived decades of daily use, making it a surprisingly rare sight today.

Toyota Supra

Before it became a performance legend in the 1990s, the third-generation Toyota Supra established itself during the late 1980s with advanced engineering and smooth turbocharged power. It was overshadowed by later models, leaving many people to forget just how impressive this generation really was.

The Supra was derived from the Celica, but it was longer and wider, the first 4 generations got a 6 cyl engine (standard Celicas were 4 cyl)
The Supra was built from 1978-2002, from 1986 the Celica name was dropped, now just Toyota Supra.

Buick Reatta

Buick attempted something radically different with the Reatta, a handcrafted two-seat luxury coupe assembled in a specialized production facility. Its touchscreen controls and distinctive styling were ahead of their time, but buyers never fully embraced the concept, limiting production and making surviving examples surprisingly uncommon.

Chrysler Conquest

The Chrysler Conquest gave American dealerships a genuine Japanese sports car by rebadging Mitsubishi's acclaimed Starion. Turbocharged performance and sharp styling earned loyal fans, but modest sales and limited production ensured the Conquest became one of the decade's most overlooked performance machines.

Merkur XR4Ti

Imported from Europe by Ford, the Merkur XR4Ti combined turbocharged performance with distinctive German styling. American buyers never quite understood where it fit in the marketplace, and its unusual name certainly did not help. Today it remains one of the rarest Ford showroom offerings ever sold.

Dodge Omni GLH

Carroll Shelby transformed the humble Dodge Omni into the surprisingly quick GLH, short for 'Goes Like Hell.' Lightweight construction and turbocharged performance created a genuine hot hatch that embarrassed far more expensive sports cars while remaining practical enough for everyday driving.

Volkswagen Scirocco

The second-generation Volkswagen Scirocco blended sporty styling with everyday practicality, becoming a favorite among younger buyers during the 1980s. Rust, heavy modification, and decades of hard use have made original examples increasingly difficult to find despite the model's once widespread popularity.

Honda Prelude

The Honda Prelude introduced innovative technology and exceptional handling that helped define affordable sports coupes during the decade. Four-wheel steering on later models showcased Honda's engineering ambition. Although highly respected, many were driven extensively, leaving relatively few well-preserved examples today.

AMC Eagle

The AMC Eagle combined passenger car comfort with four-wheel drive years before crossovers became fashionable. Its unique formula made it remarkably versatile, but AMC's financial troubles limited its future. Today many enthusiasts view it as one of the earliest ancestors of the modern crossover SUV.

Saab 900 Turbo

The Saab 900 Turbo developed a devoted following thanks to its distinctive Scandinavian styling, outstanding safety reputation, and charismatic turbocharged engine. Although once common in affluent neighborhoods, high repair costs and limited dealer networks gradually caused many examples to disappear from the roads.

Sterling 825

Britain's Rover partnered with Honda to create the Sterling 825, hoping to challenge European luxury brands in America. Comfortable interiors and refined driving manners impressed reviewers, but poor build quality and reliability concerns quickly damaged its reputation and ended the experiment.

Cadillac Cimarron

Cadillac expected the Cimarron to attract younger luxury buyers, but consumers immediately recognized it as little more than a dressed-up Chevrolet Cavalier. The car became one of General Motors' most infamous badge-engineering mistakes and failed to deliver the prestige Cadillac customers expected.

Yugo GV

Few cars symbolize bargain-basement transportation quite like the Yugo GV. Its incredibly low purchase price initially generated enormous publicity, but poor reliability, questionable quality, and disappointing performance quickly turned it into one of America's most ridiculed imports.

Renault Alliance

The Renault Alliance actually won Motor Trend's Car of the Year award when it debuted, but long-term reliability failed to match the early enthusiasm. Mechanical problems and inconsistent quality rapidly eroded consumer confidence, leading to disappointing sales and an early disappearance from American dealerships.

Dodge Aries

The Dodge Aries helped Chrysler survive financially by introducing practical front-wheel-drive family transportation. While historically significant, few people remember the model fondly today because it prioritized sensible transportation over excitement, making it easy to overlook decades later.

Plymouth Reliant

Closely related to the Dodge Aries, the Plymouth Reliant became another pillar of Chrysler's dramatic recovery. Reliable enough for everyday commuting but hardly memorable to drive, it gradually disappeared once newer generations of family sedans rendered it thoroughly obsolete.

Chevrolet Citation

General Motors expected the Chevrolet Citation to revolutionize compact cars with front-wheel drive and hatchback practicality. Early demand proved enormous, but quality issues, recalls, and handling concerns quickly tarnished its reputation, causing many buyers to look elsewhere.

Oldsmobile Firenza

The Oldsmobile Firenza attempted to add a touch of sophistication to the compact-car segment, but it struggled to distinguish itself from its corporate siblings. Like many badge-engineered General Motors products of the era, it gradually faded from public memory.

Pontiac 6000

The Pontiac 6000 served faithfully as dependable family transportation throughout much of the 1980s. Although competent and reasonably comfortable, it lacked the personality needed to become memorable. As newer sedans replaced it, the model quietly disappeared with little fanfare.

Mercury Lynx

Ford's Mercury division marketed the Lynx as a more upscale version of the Escort. While perfectly serviceable transportation, it offered little that truly separated it from its cheaper sibling, resulting in modest collector interest and very few surviving examples.

Chevrolet Celebrity

The Chev Celebrity became one of America's best-selling cars during the mid-1980s, yet it has almost completely vanished from today's roads. Built primarily as practical transportation, most examples were driven until they simply wore out rather than being preserved.

Forgotten For Different Reasons

Some of these cars disappeared because they were genuinely excellent but overlooked. Others vanished because poor quality, uninspired engineering, or changing consumer tastes sealed their fate. Together they offer a fascinating snapshot of one of the automotive industry's most experimental decades.
